This is entirely possible for a private outing with a guide, which is the best way to learn the technique and progress quickly.
If you are in an organized group, make sure that all your outing partners are at the same level or are aware of your beginner level, as the guide will have to plan the outing according to the level of the least technically skilled person for safety reasons.
